Student-Centered Math: Problem Solving & Productive Struggle

This course provides educators with strategies to enhance students' success and accessibility in math, focusing on problem solving and productive struggle. Participants will deepen their understanding of mathematical practices, particularly in making sense of problems and developing perseverance, while promoting equity and access to grade-level math.

Designed for K-12 educators, the course offers open or varied-level tasks and includes 5 self-paced modules, which will take a total of about 15 hours to complete. Participants will complete 2 lessons, 1 discussion, and 1 assignment per module, with feedback provided on 2 assignments (or all 5 upon request).

The Basics for Deep Understanding of Fractions

This course will introduce the progressions of how fractions can be taught for really deep understanding. Often students don’t get enough time to play with fractions to develop a full understanding of the complexity of a fraction. We want to create opportunities for students to develop a feeling for fraction size.  We will explore partitioning and iterating with manipulatives to develop relative size.  We will use number lines to show fractions as numbers and  values.  Additionally, we will work with number lines to help students with measurement.  The course will focus on ways to compare fractions so students can relate the numerals to their physical size and to their representation on a number line.  Learners will be introduced to routines that allow students to explore fractions in a conceptual way.

Literacy in Math

Do you struggle to find time to focus on writing within the math block? You are not alone. This course will provide ways to incorporate literacy instruction into math lessons to support strong Tier 1 instruction for all students, including MLLs. This course will also help you break down the language in math story problems and provide best practices on how literacy instruction can live in your 60 minute math block. We will also explore various ways to support MLL learners when solving word story problems.
